We were left at the entrance of a village, but on a long straight line, so the cars were passing full speed. No hope. But in 5 minutes, a SUV stops, the driver is a man about 50 55 years old, very well dressed.
Christian is the CEO of a branch in Charleston, South Carolina, of a German company. Its founder is the inventor of anti-fire system for production lines. It is a niche business, but of several billions. Christian says it is very hard to do business in US. Some employees steeled some technical plans, he fired them and called them in justice. After half a year and half of million spent, he realised that the justice works to make money for the advocates, so he negotiated directly with the other part, just to limit the loss. He says as well the business climate is much harder, all that matters is the cheap price. His family is in Hamburg, he wants to set the branch on a stable track and then to retire and work with wood.
Everything is perfect. We stop the car at the red light due to road repairing in an amazing spot. We could see the beach like from an air-plane, very, very long, with dunes like in Belgium
At the sunset we agreed to stop in a small beach city for the night, and next day he pick-up from the road, if he sees us. He didn’t want to fix an hour. We understood that maybe he prefers to travel by himself.
On the gps, it had looked easy to find a spot in a forest to put the hammock near the beach, but in US, the access is private, so we settle in a bush, in the garden of someone, but the house was on a hill. In the beginning we had a little of stress when people from the party were going on the terrace, but it was a nice sleep, despite the wind.
Next morning we walked an hour to get back to the main road. Nobody stopped. All tourists.
Finally an old hippy stopped. He met his wife in the 70s, he was hitchhiking, she stopped for him, after 10 minutes she invited at her place for the night … I asked him how it was in the 70s to hitchhike … it wasn’t so easy, sometimes he was waiting 4-5 hours to get a truck.
Unfortunately he drove us only a couple of kilometres, he left us after the bridge across a river and told us to pay attention because in these days hitchhiking is dangerous.
10 seconds later, we see a car stopping in front of us “Guten Morgen Herr Christian” !!
We spend all the day with him, thinking we are doing a road trip with a German CEO. We had such a good time with him. One of his sons plays the cello and is famous in his town.
In the caravan someone plays a guitar. His song, lures someone who parked to see the ocean. This guy gets to his car for his guitar.
We help him to find a piece of wood. He wants to make a sculpture for the birthday of a cousin, living in California.
Christian left us in Redwoods forest.
