None of us has ever been with a RV. We rented by curiosity, we had no expectations. This was a very good thing.
freedom: not at all, you can park only in RV camping spots. Even in October was pretty difficult to find a place near the national parks, so in high season, it must be impossible without reservation. So the freedom is very limited. Plus you need to connect to electric, sewer, water every 3 days.
choice: A camping owner said that there are only 2 rental companies. We had several technical issues with ours and the presentation was very brief and quick.
cost: a room in a motel near Yellowstone costs 100$, the same price as for the rent of RV. The gas consumption is 20L/100km, so it’s pretty expensive, even with 0.5 euros / litre.
limited space: actually we felt very good, in 2 weeks, the 8 sqm didn’t felt like a small space. Of course, we spent a lot of time outdoors, I don’t know how people can live in a camping.
comfort: actually the beds are very good, the shower was pretty tiny, but manageable. The toilet is better to be used as rare as possible, because on a hilly road, it stinks.
management: it is not so difficult to learn all the systems: electrical, water, sewer, gas, fridge. But it takes time to get used to them.
The best thing was that we could slalom between the drops of the rain: several times we went on the mountain, and came to the RV after it started to rain. It’s like in a chalet, you cook, the heat of the kitchen raises the temperature and we spend the time in an intimate space.
Without a caravan is difficult to do camping, because the place for tents is limited, and the majority of the neighbours have a big one:
It is so big, that attaching a truck with a jet-ski to the RV is common and the increase of gas consumption is small …
When people live all year long in a RV you need all the comfort, so a living room with crystal wine glasses, 4 TV sets. It’s a house on wheels, and it has the price of a big house, 400.000 $. To this budget, you must add 1500$ per month for the camping. A couple were really friendly and showed us their big rv. They are both retired and sold everything, “all that stuff” to buy it. The one who did the visit is an army veteran. I asked him about the social life … 6 months ago, his neighbours came with a bottle of wine for the anniversary of their gay marriage.
