Hitchhiking is a gift

Our great host in Portland, Uli, left us in a good spot. After 10 minutes, a car came from the opposite direction, they had seen us, and took us.

They are the Ayers family: the mother and two daughters, which have as well grandchildren. The mother was the wife of Jimmy Ayers, a Nascar car pilot. When he came after the war, he thought what he liked the most, the race cars, and he went to work at Indianapolis. 2 years later, he got a wheel. He and his wife invented a safer helmet. But it was stolen by Bell Helmets, which is now a big helmet producer.
All their big family likes to watch races, except one daughter. But it was too hard to see her husband racing.

First night in Portland

We arrive late in the afternoon. We look for a park where to put the hammock. There is some green on the gps application near the river. We took all the luggage and there we see a lot of homeless people. After the good experience in Victoria, I am tempted to try here as well. Emilie suggests to speak with a small group. I refuse the gently offered pot, but they give me a good advice: run, it is dangerous there, because of narcotic people and they recommend another park, out of the center.

Mike & Julia – Victoria

We are walking in Victoria in the waterfront. It is late to watch the sunset and we need to find a place where to set the hammock. I want to shoot a last photo, but a guy is in the middle. I don’t mind, anyway it’s dark.

We take the backpacks, and the same guy drops his bike in our way. So, what could we do? only to start to speaking with him! I can see that the dark is coming, but what an energy ! I agree with Emilie to find later where we’ll sleep, and now to ride the wave. Continue reading Mike & Julia – Victoria
